Bauman Moscow State Technical University SM-8 (Space-rocket launch complexes) department

The department was established in 1959 bya prominent Soviet scientist and space-rocket hardware designer Vladimir Barmin. The department’s graduates work on design and operation systems for launch pads, spacecraft launch preparation.

The current head of the department is FSUE “TsENKI” Chief Designer for space ground-based infrastructure and Deputy DirectorGeneral, the Russian Academy of Sciences member – professor Igor Barmin.

The department’s students gain a wide knowledge of rocket launch mechanics and dynamics; liquids and gases mechanics; cryogenics; fuel filling systems; temperature check and climate control systems; modelling of launch pads monitoring and operation processes.

The department’s fourth year students have internships in the country’s leading companies of space and aviation industry. The students can also gain experience working at Baikonur, Kapustin Yar, Plesetskcosmodromes and at the Ministry of Defense studying facilities.

There are prominent scientists and engineers, university professors, and heads of the country’s biggest enterprisesamong department’s graduates.

The students conduct researches on space equipment for launch complexes under professors’ supervision. These findings are applied to modernize “Soyuz” and “Proton” launch complexes; to design “Energia-Buran”, “Pioner”, “Topol”, “Topol-M”, “Rokot” units and launch complexes, sea launch complexes, spacecraft’s fuel filling station and waste disposal facilities.
